One doesn't paddle this kind of water unless one is very, very good. Hair boating...be safe but enjoy.

if i remember this run correctly, isn't there an 8 foot boof over a monster hole about 2/3's the way down.... the river bends at a 90 degree left and the boil line is pretty far (about 15 or so feet)??? i remember seeing a line there, but we only had 2 in our group and had been told it's a mand. portage and it hadn't been run... i'd love to run that drop (with safety).... i've got some other pics from this run, if ya want them... this is definitely a must do. i agree, the beauty of it can't be stressed enough! nice write up.

Perhaps that is the portage shown in the short video clip, but at low water? I've heard of people missing the eddy and swimming through it, but no intentional runs. If you want to send pictures my way, feel free, I'll give credit and put decent looking shots up. Thanks for the comment, Darin

Hey Darin - great to see a write up of a run I got done on my last trip to Cali (2002). I got a couple of weeks boating way too early in the season and because all the high up stuff was under feet and feet of snow, we hit up a random run in the guidebook. Just a bunch of confused Brits, we guessed at the put-on and take-out because the guidebook wasnt't too clear, but it looks like we got it right. I definitely remember that last must-run getting the blood flowing, and a couple of good surfs at the level we had...

My buddy and I did this run 2 years ago Thanksgiving (after a good rain), also just as a random run from the guidebook. We were class IV boaters at the time, and we still talk about the beauty and challenge of this adventure. I remember my buddy getting on the bike to shuttle back to the car as darkness and fog enveloped us, and I went to look down into the gorge. The unportagable, barely scoutable rapid looks big even from the top of the canyon walls.
